I don't know whether the dad is disappointed or proud and is slightly smiling. I choose to believe it is the latter, as the octopi colours suggest that the green one is the kid from the original comic - the timespan between original and remake makes sense.
Also, I was wondering why the dad is hugging a large queen, then I was like 'oooohhhh'.
On the other note, you gave it a bit philosophical meaning, as the chess figures are born as pawns and can get passed (passed pawn, get it, haha) if they try hard enough - either that or they are controlled by a greater entity and have no free will, which would be terrible).
